Fabric Mosaic Art

Artist Statement – Medium

Artist Statement

My work with fabric mosaics derives from my extensive experience in apparel design and construction. My intuitive understanding of the relationships between color, texture and design combined with my passion for detail and devotion to technical mastery makes fabric the natural medium for my artistic expressions. My primary sources of inspiration include wide-ranging historical works of art: paintings, sculpture, Byzantine mosaics and iconography, illuminated manuscripts and ancient pottery. I am drawn to subjects reflecting an archetypal feminine beauty, wisdom, grace, courage and strength. Through contemplation of these past works, I am moved to create my own vision with a fresh and modern perspective of the timeless virtues, values and ideals they embody.

The Medium

The medium is exclusively cotton fabric, applied to a muslin backing.  Small fabric pieces are overlapped and bonded.  Outlining, shading and contouring are accomplished with delicate fabric strips; no stitching, painting or ink is used.

This is amazing artwork. How long does a piece take you?

    • Thank you, Liz. The time it takes varies from one piece to the next. They take anywhere from a month to six months. Two to three months is probably average. There is a lot of working and reworking that goes on and sometimes you have to rest with a piece before finding the solution to the challenges that arise. I remember that I had to complete six sets of eyes (trying various colors and shapes) on Golden Intercessor before I could get her to to “look” at me… that was when I knew I finally had it. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by and viewing my work. Most appreciated.
